AJith’s Mankatha is smashing box-office records at will. Trade sources say the opening collections are next only to Rajini’s Robot

If Salman Khan’s Bodyguard is rewriting box-office records in Bollywood, then Ajith’s Mankatha is doing the same in Kollywood. According to trade sources, Thalai’s 50th film has taken the biggest opening of the year. Unconfirmed reports also say the film has grossed the second biggest opening ever in Tamil, only after Rajinikanth’s Robot.
Industry watchers say the Venkat Prabhu-directed flick has collected at least Rs 8 crore on the opening day, having had a 93 % opening in over 350 plus screens.
Some theatres in Tamil Nadu had screened shows as early as 5:00 am with 100% attendance, something that has happened only for Rajnikanth’s Endhiran in the recent past.
Sathyam Cinemas in Chennai had Mankatha as morning show in all their six screens and got 100 per cent collection — again the previous such instance only for Robot. At the Mayajaal multiplex on the East Coast Road, all 14 screens showed Mankatha on Ramzan day, with 70 shows a day. All shows were houseful.Though it is too early to tabulate the figures, but Mankatha, in all probability, will be Ajith’s biggest ever hit. Industry watchers say the film has brought back “the missing crowd that had gone to pursue the other modes of entertainment” to theatres. Like olden days, Thalai fans had turned up in huge numbers at theatres, indulging in palabhishekam.
When contacted, Ajith said, “Probably, the ‘game’ was felt to be good enough by the audience.”
“It is all because of our Thalai and all of us are his hardcore fans,” saysd director Venkat Prabhu is excited.
Sun Pictures, however, has been tight-lipped so far when it comes to revealing the collection figures.
